CEL's intensive language programs lead to confident acquisition of seven English language skills:

Grammar.  Through many varieties of communicative activities students learn to speak and to write using standard American English grammar.

Composition.  Students, using samples of good writing as models, compose first drafts which are then revised, one by one, with all students participating in the revision process until a third, and final, draft is attained.

Reading.  Students acquire strategies for reading from many different kinds of texts.  They learn to select the main idea, identify supporting ideas, sort out fact from opinion, understand point of view, and draw conclusions.

Vocabulary.  Students are immersed in vocabulary covering a wide variety of topics including food, clothing, housing, sports, industry, business and finance, the workplace, education, entertainment, science, and technology.

Listening.  Key to the acquisition of good speaking and and conversation skills is the developing of good listening habits.  Students listen to many kinds of audiocassette programs and then discuss the ideas and feelings being expressed.

Speaking / Conversation.  Students participate in a variety of speaking/conversation activities.  They learn how to begin and end conversations and how to enter into a discussion.  A variety of reading and/or listening materials provide daily topics for discussion.

Pronunciation.  Intensive pronunciation drills enable students to acquire American English speech sounds, stress, and intonation.
